For me, it is about the surrounding atmosphere: light, air, mist, warmth\u2014the threshold where the material world dissolves into a purely sensory experience. Recently, a viewer remarked, &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t feel like a painting; it\u2019s as if I\u2019m standing right in the middle of that moment.&#8221; That is precisely what I aim for. While the Impressionists painted the light upon their subjects, I paint the atmosphere that surrounds them. This creates space: Impressionism gives the atmosphere a soul, while abstraction grants the subject freedom. When somebody says &#8220;I can feel the tranquility of that place.&#8221; That is the whole point.
